The desktop appeared on the DK2 once I turned it on. I just plugged my DK2 into an Asus Vivo (a NUC style mini pc using only a crappy intel gpu). Dead pixels are really bad in VR, since they aren't stereo (it will annoy your brain). It's easier to see them through the lenses if they are in the middle, but you can take the lenses out to check the rest of the screen. You can't test VR like that, but if you display a solid background colour you can check for dead pixels (use a white background) or stuck pixels (use a black background). The DK2 will by default work as a monitor (but sideways). One thing you can do: have no rift software installed at all. Generally I'd say that if you already have a 1080 and a i6700k, you should get a CV1 instead of a near obsolete dev kit that is unsupported. So if you test the guy's DK2 and it doesn't work, it might be the rift or it might be that the laptop isn't compatible. Many laptops have issues even if they aren't intel. All of the 1.x series of sdks require internet access and auto update to the latest version. Since you are talking about the DK2, you could try an older sdk from before direct mode. Nvidia and AMD have done this, but Intel hasn't.

The main issue at the moment is that the way the oculus runtime works, it requires special support for 'direct mode' (the way the rift is accessed by windows, making it an explicit vr display and not a monitor) built into the graphics drivers.
